Refrigerators are appliances that everyone in the world uses. They help us keep our food safe and viable for eating even after days of storage.
However, these systems require 24 energy backups to run and are also known to release harmful gases into the atmosphere. Not to mention that they are quite loud and have very specific maintenance needs.
Not a new kind of refrigerator launched by a company called Cooltech Applications aims to take care of all those problems while also saving you money on electricity costs.
They aim to do this via their Commercial Magnetic Refrigeration System, or MRS. The MRS houses a unique system that uses the magnetocaloric effect to keep your food cool.
Under this system, the magnetocaloric materials inside the refrigerator go through a cycle of magnetization and demagnetization, which creates a magnetic field around your food.
A water coolant is pumped through them to transfer the heat from the interior to the outside air. The idea is not a new one, but this is the first time it has been used in a commercial capacity.
By using this system, the refrigerator eliminates the need for chemicals, as well as reduces the power consumption by almost half. In addition the magnets also produce less noise and vibration, and require less maintenance.
The first commercial system to feature this technology has been named, the MRS400, and is undergoing Beta Testing for commercial uses as we speak.
Once the testing is done, we can expect more commercial variants of this system to hit the market. The hope is that, with time, this technology will become mainstream in both commercial and residential settings, thus cutting down greatly on environmental and economic burdens related to food preservation.
