Neurological Diseases are one of the worst kind of diseases to have, since they attack the very core of the body. The debilitating effects of these diseases are permanent since the neurons that are damaged through them aren’t repairable.
However, now, there’s hope for the people suffering from such diseases, in the form of a new treatment which could possibly trigger Nerve Cell Regeneration in humans.
This treatment focuses on using mobile Mitochondria to kickstart the repair process in these cells, since mitochondria is what supplies power to the cells in the first place.
This power is used to cause chemical reactions which help extend nerve cells through the body. As we get older, the mitochondria gets locked in place, thanks to a protein called Syntaphilin.
The scientists hope that by targeting and removing syntaphilin in the damaged cells, the mitochondria would be able to be active and mobile once again, thus restoring the regeneration process in nerve cells.
If done on a large enough scale, this treatment could be effective in repairing permanent damage done to the nervous system. The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke in the US has already tested this theory in mice.
In those experiments, it was observed that when they genetically remove the syntaphilin from damaged cells, they were able to start the regeneration of damaged nerve cells.
The scientists are now focusing on ways to replicate this process in humans as well, although it would take a considerable amount of time before this treatment reaches human trails.
Still, the fact that something like this could be possible is enough to give hope to the thousands of people suffering from all sorts of neurological disorders all over the world.
