3D Technology is one of those viewing standards that never really made it to the mainstream. Despite the fact that most theaters do show 3D versions of popular movies, people still prefer the chance of watching movies only in 2D.
The reason behind this is the fact that on one hand, not all 3D screens comply with the latest 3D technologies, and on the other hand, a lot of people can’t stand watching movies in 3D glasses.
While we certainly cannot force movie theaters to comply with latest industry standards, we can however remove the need for using 3D glasses.
This was the philosophy behind the work done by researchers from MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab (CSAIL) along with Israel’s Weizmann Institute of Science.
This work is aimed towards developing a new type of 3D display that lets audiences enjoy a 3D movie in a movie theatre, without the need for 3D glasses.
The technology uses a special collection of lenses and mirrors to create a true 3D viewing experience that can be enjoyed from any seat in the theater.
In addition this experience can also be viewed without glasses, as well as without compromising on resolution, which up until now was only possible in 3D TV’s.
We do not know the details of this optics system, as it is still in concept phase, but we do hope that one day soon enough, we would be able to see it in our nearest movie theater as well.
