Researchers from the European Southern Observatory (ESO) have found and confirmed the existence of an earth like planet, called Proxima B, in the Alpha Centauri Star System.
This news has shocked and delighted the scientific community at large, since, if this planet is earth like, then it means that it might also share our most valuable feature, the ability to sustain life.
In order to understand the gravity of the situation, we have to remember that the only reason we began exploring space in the first place, was to search for other planets that could potentially harbor life.
Towards this goal, researchers have looked through various sections of the universe, often finding fascinating places, like the Element Rich Galaxy that is the dream of every industrialist.
But now that we have found what we were initially looking for, we can focus all our attention on this new planet, which could potentially become our second home someday.
The reason we are so optimistic, is because this is the only potentially habitable planet, that we have found so close to our solar system.
By close, we mean only 4.2 Light Years away from us, nestled inside the habitable zone of Proxima Centauri, a red dwarf star that is well within the range of our space probes.
While it may not be as close as Mars, but it still is a lot more exciting, since it has far more chances of being easily terraformed when compared to the Red Planet.
For this and all the other reasons, researchers have already begun discussing possible planned expeditions to the planet, which could be carried out within the new few decades, making it a really interesting time to be alive in.
