A software company called BrickSimple has created a mixed reality app that lets you use a Hololens device to mark and recall stud positions in your walls.
As you can guess, this app targets construction workers, contractors, architects and almost anyone else who is interested in nailing something to a wall.
While it may not be as simple as the WalabotDIY 3D Sensor, it still offers a more comprehensive interface that is designed specifically to make sure you don’t need to look for a stud twice.
All you need to do is wear a Hololens device that has the app already loaded, while you use any regular stud finder to look for studs through the traditional method.
Once you find the stud, you can either speak the word stud, or let the app recognize the beeps of the stud finder. In doing so, the app gets a chance to save the location of that stud.
Even if you move away from the room and come back after some time, the app will still remember the location of the stud, thus removing the need for special markings.
As you can see, the system is fairly easy to use, and it also saves all the stud location on a holographic map of the wall so you can work your way through the project without thinking twice.
It is understandable that such a mundane application of the holographic technology is not something that people get really excited about, but from the worker’s perspective, it is something that will one day change the way they approach their jobs altogether.
