Mercedes has unveiled their new contender in the luxury SUV/Crossover segment, with a new type of all electric concept car, which is being called the EQ Concept.
This concept was unveiled at the Paris Motor Show, and it showcases the ambitions Mercedes has regarding the luxury electric vehicle market.
It is expected to feature a tweaked version of the Hybrid EV Platform that Mercedes announced some time back, in a bid to increase the efficiency of it’s electric vehicles.
This increase in efficiency is immediately evident, as Mercedes claims that this SUV will be able to do almost 500kms in a single charge, making it one of the most efficient SUV’s in the segment.
In addition, the power of the electric engine will also be able to push the car from 0-60 in under 5 seconds, making it one of the fastest SUV’s as well.
However, despite all these advancements in drive technology, the real USP of this vehicle will still remain it’s luxury tag, which it certainly seems to have earned.
On the exterior, the car features a sleek yet powerful design, which comes with an electric grill, which seems to be borrowed from the Vision Van Concept.
The rest of the body is kept unusually smooth, which can seem off-putting, but certainly grown on you with time. The only lines visible can be found in the front and rear.
This obviously isn’t the final iteration of the design, but it does show the direction which Mercedes seems to be taking in both it’s consumer as well as Commercial Vehicles.
On the interior, the entire cabin feels quite airy, since there are not a lot of actual physical buttons in sight. Instead, the car features a 24 inch TFT display, which contains all the information about the car and all it’s systems.
By making this display touch enabled, Mercedes seems to be truly embracing the digital movement, which in itself is a move that excites and scares a lot of people.
The reason behind the fear, is the thought that if the electronics of the vehicles become compromised in some way, the car would essentially become a useless box.
It is not yet clear what Mercedes plans to do regarding these fears, but it can be assumed that if and when the car does go into production, it will come with safeguards in place for such contingencies.
Since Mercedes hasn’t really revealed any plans regarding the actual production of this vehicle, we don’t have to worry about these things just yet.
So we can just sit back and relax, and enjoy the view of this amazing vehicle, which will one day become the present and future of the automobile industry.
